I recorded myself speaking the poem so you could follow along with the correct cadence and rhyme schemes. If you think you’ll find that helpful you can get that right here. Also, I personally recommend that you read along while listening instead of watching the “video” (a.k.a. two boring slideshow pictures) in the link.

They say it looks a lot like Christmas, but I feel a lot like summer.
These people bury their heads in textbooks but look like Carrey as they get dumber and dumber.
I overlook the person who seems left in a world that values living right
But then I look to the right and realize there’s no one righteous within my sight.
Good people end up being bad when the ones you thought were bad are good.
And then there’s a category of people in between that just never quite found where they stood.
And after all this time, I’ve realized that there are very few things that matter.
The least of these which tends to be my position on society’s social ladder.
It doesn’t matter what you do, so much as who you are and though those two things will go hand in hand,
If you take a step back with a chill pill to relax you will soon understand
That it’s not so much about how righteously you live, King David was a terrorist, after all.
Instead it’s about who or what you’re living for and ultimately whether it leads you to rise or fall.
So…
I know this is a controversial message, and I’m not saying we should go out and murder.
I’m just saying that if you spend more time focusing on who you are than what you do, you’re less likely to need that emergency life preserver

The one that’s shaped like a broken hearted prayer
Full of despair
Realizing just how bad off you’ve been
The one that stares back at the headphone jack thinking about the trouble you would have been in
If everyone knew that you’d do the things you do, would they still love you anyway?
“No, they couldn’t…”
And so these types of doubts are the ones that plague our minds and they come from day to day.
“But they shouldn’t…”
Or at least that’s what we think because what about him or her?
Their lives look pretty perfect on Instagram.
And I have to be like him and I have to be like her because they won’t accept me for who I am!
I have thoughts in my brain and dreams in my heart, but they’ll never come true unless they like me.
Because the world needs to see something beautiful and positive if there’s any chance of them listening.
And so it’s lies like these that we are taught to believe and we can’t even find out who’s the teacher.
And these lies bend us like the weight of a hurricane on a tree until we’re led to confession with the preacher.
Yet confession isn’t what changes you. It’s about acknowledging and trusting.
It’s letting go of these anxieties that keeps you in the end from combusting.
And there’s nothing (other than talking about it) that is easy.
In fact I’d argue that it’s one hundred ten percent hard.
But if you’re going to decide to let hard things stop you, then you’ve already given up from the start.
They say it looks a lot like Christmas. They shop and they carol and they prance.
But I feel a burning fire inside of me and I hope this generation doesn’t miss their chance.
…They say it looks a lot like Christmas…
